Little Things They Said (May 9-23)
- Bill was trying to get the girls to clean their room and Olivia, protesting, said “But daddy, some people don’t want their children to clean up their room!” Bill told her he was not one of those parents, much to her dismay.
- Traci came over with the little girl she cares for, Leah, who is almost 14 months old and just starting to talk. As they were playing, Traci asked her if it was neat to play with Leah, now that she can do and say more. Olivia looked at Traci and said “I don’t really like when she talks in this language I don’t understand.” Traci explained, between laughs, that it was baby talk and she would eventually get better at saying words.
- Olivia had her dance recital recently, and we were discussing different aspects after her Saturday night performance. “Well, there was this one routine and there was a boy that looked like (her friend) Abby! I thought it was funny there was a boy Abby, so I think his name should just be Boy-Abby!” I explained that it was Abby’s older brother, and yes, they look exactly alike, but they were two different people.
- Sophia came to me, holding the tape measure (which they’ve been told not to touch a zillion times because it is heavy and not a toy). “Here mama, here!” I took it from her and she said (in the most serious voice she could muster) “I forgot I wasn’t supposed to play with it.”
- We have problems with Olivia acknowledging people when they say hello or goodbye. It’s something we are working on and I’ve written about it before. She’s better, but she is a long way from being consistent with it. Our biggest concern is her friends at school who come up to her and talk or say bye. She doesn’t seem to want to say goodbye after they hit the gates. Bill said one kid was just talking up a storm to her after school and she just shied away and ignored what he was asking her. Bill said “Olivia, you have to talk to your friends! That is very rude and you won’t be able to keep friends if you don’t talk to them.” Olivia looked at him and said, “But Daddy these are my SCHOOL friends. I talk to them AT SCHOOL, not outside of school.” Bill said it was kind of hard to argue with her logic, but we did explain how that wasn’t the way it worked.
- Bill was explaining to Olivia that when she started Elementary school she would start learning all sorts of things, like history, math, science, etc. etc. Olivia said “Well, I don’t want to learn those things, why can’t I go to ‘Do whatever I want’ school?” We told her that was called College, and she had to go through all the other years of learning before she was ready to do whatever she wanted in school.
- I was trying to get the truth out of Sophia, so I asked “Are you sure? are you telling me the truth?” She looked at me and said “Yes, of course! Because I’m a truth monster!” The next day she told me she was always going to tell lies because she was a “Lie baby”. Bill asked her if she understood what a paradox was, as telling us she would always lie was indeed, a funny paradox.
- Sophia looked up at me, batted her eyelashes and said “Gurls do dis!” I explained that everyone blinks. So she said “Oh, so gurls bleenk faster?” “Only the dumb ones” I responded.

Yes! I can see that being a Gabbaland visitor. She changes her mind all the time, and she says she wants to meow all day because she is a “cat baby” or she wants to say hello to everything because she is a “hello monster”. She’s weird.
